Deep reef communities (30-150 m) called mesophotic coral ecosystems (MCEs) have recently captured the attention of the scientific community, particularly as a result of both the continual global degradation of shallow water reefs and the development of the mesophotic refugia hypothesis. While recent technological advances in SCUBA have permitted increased research into MCE biology and ecology, there is still a critical gap in knowledge of the geology of mesophotic reefs.
